Since July this year I've picked up drumming again (after 13 years), also because a colleague and friend of mine, who plays bass, wanted to start a band and needed a drummer. So it happened. We're not racing, only taking our time to improve skills and work on new material. We all have dayjobs, so it's not like we can rehearse together every day (it's every weekend, though).

Bandname: Scutigera
Style: Hard Rock / Heavy Metal

We added our first song, though in a raw version, on our Myspace. Feel free to check it out. Constructive comments (:D) are appreciated.

It definitely has potential! It sounds like you guys enjoy what you're doing and that's half the battle I think...

Thanks, Si. Yeah, we do enjoy playing this kind of music. There's no rush and we support each other in helping with melodies, tips, etc... Patience is a virtue and luckily all is well in that department.

I agree with the potential. Its hard to say anything with just one song though.
The drumming seems stable. Great to hear that you've picked it up again!

You aready know about the production being pretty much useless.

Judging from this song it really seems like youre the one who can handle your instrument best in the band.
With more practice and a lot better production this will be good! :)

It's unfair for me to judge, since I don't really care for this kind of music, but like the others have said, it surely has potential. Keep up the work.

About enjoying what you're doing: Isn't that the case with every new band in the world? :D At least I hope so.

The drums were a little bit too loud in the mix, (at least, on what I could hear, 'cause I couldn't listen to the entire song) but it was nice, I somehow liked the riff and sound of the guitars, and hey, you really play the drums tight to the tempo. Good work man

Thanks for the comments. :)

@Aresius: yeah, practice makes perfect. ;) We know that and it became clear last Friday, when we sort of rushed through the songs and found out we played without feel and made mistakes here and there, mainly because our playtime was limited to one hour instead of the 3 each Saturday, but that's because our vocalist/guitarist didn't have time for a proper rehearsal session.

It's all a matter of discipline, but when you come home from work, it's not always easy to devote time to playing music.

That is so true, Tim.

The bands I practice with (Meadows End, and Zealotry) have 3 scheduled rehearsals each week. Meadows on monday and wednesday and Zealotry on sunday. It can really be tough after a hard days work, but we try to do it every week anyway.

Video from the last rehearsal, in preparation for our first gig (rock rally) on March 12. We played four songs, first two (in our opinion) quite alright, the other had some mistakes and too much time between guitar switching. In any case, here's the first. The second should follow in a few weeks.

http://www.myspace.c...o/vid/107452856

I know, it's an old song, but we've got two new ones already, which I we'll record on video this coming weekend. And more importantly, we urgently (sort of) need to buy some mics for the drums.

^ Damn it man, I can't hear very well the drums. However I think it's nice rehearsal, despite some mistakes on the guitars.

About the 10 seconds video: Hey, nice to see you playing (and moving, it's surprisingly weird to see a forum member moves, when you're used to see him just on pics). Just sit straight next time ;) lol jk

Thanks, mate. ;) And yeah, you're probably right about the sitting. But since there's practically nowhere a decent way to sit (work, train, those round drum stools, ...) ...I'll pay attention to it.

Great vid Tim! I particularly like the slower discordant chuggy bits (very musically technical!). Compared to band practices for bands I have been in, it is nice to be able to actually see all members and their instruments....ours were usually completely concealed in a nicotine drunken haze....sometimes could hardly even see the guitar fretboard!!!
Keep at it guys, you rock!

16.6 (Primal Fear cover)
Last Man Standing (Hammerfall cover)
Icons (own song)

Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd cover, but we gave it some speed and balls)

Thanks for the support, Si. ;) And no, no Black Metal.

1) none of us is really into that (although I can appreciate it, as you know)
2) we want to keep our songs diverse (= not Heavy Metal all the way, but also a more Bluesy one, a more Folky one, etc...)
3) I still need to develop my drumming, especially double pedals. Plus, even if I need to refrain myself from speeding up too much (not Thrash speed, but still), I prefer to drum in a more Heavy Metal way or Power Metal way. Practice makes perfect. :)
4) Our vocalist would destroy his vocal chords, plus he doesn't feel like screaming, eh, shrieking, save when it fits (to add accents or something).

@TechThing - A few days ago, I was wondering where the videos were and now I see them of Myspace :p (that's what happens when you don't read the message fully :p). Plus, I didn't know about the existance of this topic. Well, I am watching them now and I think that the performance is really, really good! The band is getting better and better indeed. Keep up the good job, man and as you said, practice makes perfect. Don't let the other members forget that.

Last Saturday we played our third gig. :) So far we've got 7 own songs, but we added 2 covers to complete the set: 16.6 by Primal Fear and Seek And Destroy by Metallica.

http://www.myspace.c...ive-41-84460669

The sound is from a small camera. We played at a youth house, so to speak, so the installation was minimal. More to follow soon, audio and video. Just keep an eye on the Myspace or the Facebook page.

Next gig is on 18/11, but we're in talks for more. We'll see. Also, we hope (!) to enter the studio in February or around that month. Priority now is getting to know the songs back and forth and play them several times before starting with new material. But we've got of course ideas and rough riffs as basis for new material. :)

I'll judge your drumming.

Well your drumming is stable, and tight, I like it man, you're tight with the tempo, and the dynamics are just fine. But, I'd like to hear some double bass, blast beats, lol, I'm kidding, but I'd really like to see how your Power (or death, thrash) metal drumming sounds like :)

Btw, the guitar player's got skills, the solos have a tremendous feeling ;)

Thanks for the commenting. :D Well, I still need to improve on double pedals, that's for sure. But that will come, slowly but surely.

In the meantime, a video of our performance of our own song Monster: http://www.myspace.c...elgem/108254815

Tight to the tempo as always, Tim. Just a few things I noticed. I feel the hi-hat a bit monotone as it goes strictly with the tempo, it ain't bat at all, but I feel it could be more dynamic, a bit of syncopes here and there sometimes ;) overall I liked the performance. My congratulation to the guitar player please :)

Oh, and I'll wait for those double pedal demostrantion of yours

I'm trying to watch the video since yesterday, but it isn't working... probably some problem on Myspace... Tim, isn't there an option for Facebook videos?

Btw, is it a tribute to the almighty Delirium beer? ;) jk :)

It's our bass player who uploads them. By the way, if you click on the links, they should work, at least they work here. Maybe you have to update your flash plugin? :noidea: Delirium is about drinking or at least, the effects. Not a tribute to any beverage. :p
